Bahria University was established in February 2000 with Faculties/Departments of Management Sciences, Computer Sciences, Earth Sciences, Professional Psychology and War Studies as the initial areas of study and research. Since then the University has tried to achieve high standards in both research and teaching at undergraduate level attracting some of the best students and faculty in the country.

The Department is headed by the Head of the Department (HOD) who reports to the Director of Institute in all administrative and academic matters. There are a number of coordinators who report to the HOD for all operational matters. The hierarchy is defined as:

Faculty members associated with the Department are encouraged to involve in administrative and co-curricular activities, apart from teaching and research. They work as class advisors, student counselors, internship coordinators and various other work roles.

Initially the Department offered Bachelor of Computer Science (BCS) and Master of Computer Science (MCS) degrees. In 2000 the existing undergraduate program was converted into Engineering Programs (Bachelor of Computer Engineering and Bachelor of Software Engineering). Similarly two more Engineering Programs (Bachelor of Electronic Engineering and Bachelor of Telecom Engineering) were added in 2005.

The MCS program was shelved in 2004, and in lieu three MS programs have been introduced. These MS Programs are: Master in Software Engineering, Master in Computer Engineering, and Master in Telecom and Networks. In total the following programs are currently running:
