Engineering Laboratories at Bahria University Karachi Campus

Engineering is not done by a lone figure in a lab coat, but by a team of dedicated, inquisitive professionals from a wide variety of backgrounds and specialties sharing their knowledge and directing their talents towards a common goal.

Only through a multidisciplinary approach can meaningful breakthroughs come to fruition. And only by engaging and encouraging students that reflect the rich and varied cultures of our society can we be assured of attracting the best qualified engineers. At the Bahria University during Engineering courses , our emphasis on diversity and collaboration has been a major factor in our success and will continue to be our defining characteristic.

Our students are encouraged to get hands-on experience, through coursework and laboratory research, as well as through international programs that give students a practical working perspective of life in another country. They are gaining expertise in understanding the complex parameters of real-world problems while building the teamwork skills that they need to succeed in whatever fields they ultimately choose.

The Bahria University Engineering Department is more than a center of learning and home to some of the world's most advanced research; it's a diverse community of innovators and inventors. In every classroom and laboratory, you'll find unique people who are passionate about learning, teaching and collaborating on groundbreaking technologies.

Networking and Communication Lab

This lab gives hands on experience on the working of various concepts of communication and networking. Students program the RS-232 interface and use it to communicate between computers.

They learn how communication protocols work, how the light propagates in the optical fiber, how a digital signal works etc. The lab consists of the latest equipment like:

  • Analog & Radio Communication Trainers(RIMS-DEV-2789)

  • Electro-optical Trainers(RIMS-DEV-2783)

  • Telecommunication Trainers(RIMS-DEV-2785E)

  • Advance Electronics Trainers(RIMS-DEV-2769)

  • Advance Digital Trainers(RIMS-DEV-2766)

  • Real Digital CPLD(XILINX-XC2-XL)

Control and Robotics Lab

The Control and Robotics Laboratory was established in June 2004 under the department of computer science at BIM&CS. The laboratory has recently received major upgrade with induction of robotic arms. The lab has the latest trainers like:

  • DSK Board ( Texas Instruments DSP Trainer, TMS 320C67119FM))

  • Virtual Instrumentation & Fundamental DSP trainers(RIMS-DEV-2787E)

  • Mini Process Control Trainer(RIMS-DEV-2750)

  • Advanced Servo & Dc Motor Control Trainer(RIMS-DEV-2752)

  • Control & Robotic Work Cell(DEV-2457)

  • Robotic Arm(DEV-2754)

Microprocessor and Interfacing Lab

This lab gives an introduction to Hardware-Software Co-design. Students play the role of a software engineer writing assembly-level code for a processor. This laboratory utilizes various software and hardware tools introducing students to processor architecture and giving them a visual "feel" for how a processor works.

Students also conduct a variety of experiments using Motorola 6809 microprocessors. These experiments include printer interfacing, terminal interfacing, electric motor control, and audio sampling and playback. The lab consists of the latest equipment like:

  • Microprocessor Interfacing Trainers(RIMS-DEV-2771E)

  • Intel Architecture Based Microcontroller Trainers(RIMS-DEV-2763E)

  • MTS -88.C Micro Computer Teaching System(MTS-88.C)

  • Advance Electronics Trainers(RIMS-DEV-2769)

  • Advance Digital Trainers(RIMS-DEV-2766)

Electronics Research and Development Lab

The Electronics Research and Development Lab is an interdisciplinary research laboratory. This lab is home to a wide range of research activities centered in following broad areas: electronics, optics, communications and signal processing.
Activities in this lab are both basic and applied, occupying the rich area spanning fundamental research.
The lab has the latest trainers like:

  • Analog & Radio Communication Trainers(RIMS-DEV-2789)

  • Telecommunication Trainer(RIMS-DEV-2785E)

Project Development Lab

In this lab students implement their final projects which involves design, fabrication and formal demonstration of hardware and software functionality. They also produce a formal project report and deliver an oral presentation. The lab consists of the latest equipment like:

  • Analog & Radio Communication Trainer(RIMS-DEV-2789)

  • Electro-optics Trainer System(RIMS-DEV-2783)

  • Telecommunication Trainer(RIMS-DEV-2785E)

  • Microprocessor Interfacing Trainers(RIMS-DEV-2771E

  • Intel Architecture Based Microcontroller Trainers(RIMS-DEV-2763E)

Library

The library is well stocked and has a rich number of titles on business, economics, computer science & engineering and related areas.

A number of business periodicals and computer magazines are regularly subscribed. Sufficient seating capacity in a spacious and studious ambiance is provided. An effort is being made to further add to the stock of books in the library.

The The library provides electronic access via The internet to the databases through the world.

Course Coordinator

Each program has a Course Coordinator who provides a wide range of counseling services to meet special needs of students including educational counseling, course selections, change of course program, withdrawal from course, readmission, etc. and counseling regarding any personal problem that may be interfering in individual's academic performance.

Methodology

All programs are based on the credit hours / semester system. In addition to the regular Fall Semester (SEP-JAN) and the Spring Semester (FEB-JUN), an intensive Summer Semester is scheduled from July to August subject to feasibility of the requirement. Admissions are opened twice in a year i.e. Fall & Spring Semester.

Academic Calendar

The Institute follows the semester system, with the Spring Semester commencing in February and the Fall Semester in September for a continued period of eighteen weeks i.e. Sixteen weeks of classroom studies and two weeks of examinations.

The Summer Semester, which becomes functional only if needed, is of shorter duration running from July (on the conclusion of the Spring Semester) to September (prior to the commencement of the Fall Semester).
